Problem Solver

Andy Wellman hasn’t lived in Chattanooga since about 2009, but he still helps countless climbers, both local and visiting, to make their way up the many bouldering and climbing problems at the area’s best sites.

Author and climber Andy Wellman begins a route at New River Gorge in West Virginia.

Wellman is the author of “Stone Fort Bouldering” and his publishing company, Greener Green Publishing, has also released climbing guide books for Horse Pens 40 near Steele, Ala., and earlier this year began selling “The Obed A Climber’s Guide to the Wild and Scenic,” which gives details about the offerings near Wartburg, Tenn.

“The idea behind each guide book is to get information across in the easiest possible way so people can get right to climbing,” says Wellman, who has climbed the most popular places across the United States for more than 15 years.

“We’ve made them super well organized so people can easily find what they are looking for. There is a color picture of every single problem that people may encounter and there is literally a line going up it.”

Each book also includes maps, historical information about the area, an array of action photos and much more. Wellman says the “extremely interconnected” climbing community has helped provide expert feedback for the books, as well as good candidates to write books, like Knoxville’s Kelly Brown, author of The Obed guide.

Available in about 80 retail locations across the U.S., Wellman says the books have sold well, and each book returns a portion of the proceeds to climbing coalitions serving the respective site’s region.

Wellman is already making plans for more guide books covering other climbs in southeast Tennessee, north Georgia and Alabama and as an avid outdoorsman interested in skiing, hiking, trail running and paddling, he says his publishing business will likely branch into new territory as well.
